When you mention to someone that you visited Aachen, they have a glimpse in their eyes saying "Aachen" something important happened in the past. Maybe the Pope was there? nope, that is Avignone
I gave them a little help, Christmas Eve? a King? CHARLEMAGNE!!! that was him.
Yes he was crowned the night of 24th December in'800.
The Dom Cathedral of Aachen is one of the most influential buildings in Europe – architecturally, historically and religiously. The great Emperor Charlemagne built it; he is buried here, along with many other later emperors and religious leaders. Some of Germany's most important historical treasures are contained within. Thirty of Germany’s kings were crowned inside this church. It is an important pilgrimage stop.
with its high and bell tower is very difficult to miss it.
Aachen Cathedral not an easy site to photograph. The exterior is a hotchpotch of different styles, the original romanesque core (which is the most interesting part) is fully enclosed by gothic and even later additions.
when entering the church you’ll know this one is special. You will probably be impressed by its colourful mosaics, not a sight very common with gothic cathedrals
