Walking into the Tallinn's old town ( Talina) take you back into the 15th century, along narrow cobbled streets. Not only the architecture, but also local businneses have the tendency to dress in paesant garb. you have the cahnce to pass through old mercant houses, hidden medieval courtyard, looming spires and winding straircases leading to views over the city.
The Old centre is small and you can enjoy it just walking around without fallowing a specific path. If you come from the arbor, it is likely you will enter the city through the Great coast gate, ht emost impressive of the remaining medieval gates.
From almost evry point of the city, you cannot miss the spire of St Olaf's church. The 124m spire is a Tallinn landmark, and was the tallest building in Europe between 1549 and 1625.
From the top, you can have a view of all the city and also having an idea of the structure of medieval fortification
A narrow passage, called White Bread Passage,
leads to the Church of the Holy Spirit. Built in Gothic style, it was restored in 2002. The peculiar clock placed on the façade is the oldest clock of Tallinn (1684) and is one of the symbols of the city.
Looking at the curch from the main square, on the left side, there is a restaurant where with few € you can have a taste of medieval Estonian food
Going down the Vene Street (the ancient Russian Merchants street) it is possible to find a delightful alley known as Catherine’s Passage (Katariina Kaik), which is one of the most beautiful and romantic places of the old city.
the south border of old Tallinn is Viru gate, that connects the old town with the commercial area.
To have an idea of the city, you should walk outside the wall, to appreciate the structure. You can see how Tallinn is built on top of a hill, with walls along the permeter and towers
From the numerous gates is possible to reach Tompea hill.
Once on the top, the square is occupied by the Alexander Nevsky's cathedral.
Walking further , you reach the Patkul lookout, where you can enjoy a nice view of the lower town
